The Universe

5 Solar and 2 Lunar eclipses occurred in the year 1935. This is the highest ever recorded in a single year. No solar eclipse ever lasts for longer than 7 minutes and 58 Sees.

The surface of the Earth, above sea level, is about 149.6 million sq. Km .The combined expansion of the oceans is about 360.6 million sq. km.

A Nebula (cloud of dust and gas) shaped boomerang and also named Boomerang Nebula, is 5000 light years from the Earth. It is also one of the coldest places in the universe, where a temperature of -426°C has been recorded.

There are 88 known constellations (group of stars) in the sky which we can see from the Earth. Hydra is the largest winch covers the surface equivalent of 3.16% of the whole sky and has at least 68 stars. Southern Cross, the smallest, which takes up a space equivalent to 0.16% of the entire sky.

Caloris Basin, one of Mercury's Craters, is half as large as the whole of North America. Mercury has a diameter of 4,878 km, and the average distance from Mercury to the Sun is 58 million km.

Activities such as Prominence and Sunspots, waxes and wanes during the solar cycle on the Sun, reaches the peak every 11 years. When at the maximum, the number of Sun spots increases. The temperature of prominence, a gas jet which rises for thousands of kilo-metres is more than 10,000°C.

The Sombrero galaxy is so called because in fading light it resembles a Mexican hat - Sombrero. It is one of the largest galaxies at the southern edge of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. It is observed from the NASA's Spitzer space telescope that it is located 28 million light years from the Earth and is equivalent to the size of 800 billion Suns.

The largest magnet in the universe is the Earth, because the presence of hot nickel and iron at its core pulls everything towards it.

The amount of solar energy that reaches the Earth's atmosphere every 24 hours is equivalent to the amount of energy that would be released by 200 million electric power stations during the same period of time.

Light takes 8 minutes and 17 seconds from the Sun to reach the Earth. It travels at the speed of 3, 00, 000 km/sec.
