The Universe

The diameter of Venus is 12104 km and the distance from Venus to the Sun is 108 million km. One Venus day equals 243 days on Earth.

The largest star is the super-giant Betelgeuse, which is 520 light years away from us. Its diameter is about 400 times greater than that of the Sun.

The Earth's atmosphere is like a thin layer of gas, which protects our planets from the Sun's harmful radiation, whilst retaining enough heat to prevent the Earth from freezing over.

The mass (weight) of the Earth is about 6 sextillion tonnes. (Sextillion = 1021)

The Sun measures 13, 92, 500 km across - 109 times the diameter of the Earth and ten times bigger than Jupiter.

The Sun does not actually rise at dawn. It is the Earth that moves, spinning on its axis whilst orbiting around the Sun.

Hoba, the biggest meteorite weighing 54 tonnes, was found in Namibia (South Africa) in the year 1920.
