The Universe

An expert driver driving a race car, travelling at maximum speed would need an endless supply of fuel and take 340 billion years - 25 times more than the age of the Universe, to reach the finishing line at the centre of the Milky Way.

Mars, at around 225 million km away from the Sun, has a 27000 m high mountain, an extinct volcano called Olympus Mons which is more than 3 times higher than the Mount Everest.

If you could travel at the speed of light, like the Millennium falcon in the film 'Star Wars', you would reach the Moon in less than 2 seconds, Pluto in 6 hours and across the Milky Way in 1, 00, 000 years.

Moon, like a huge magnet, attracts liquid masses in the Earth's atmosphere, which causes high tides on seas. This happens, twice, each day, approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.

Venus is the brightest heavenly body seen from the Earth, besides the Sun and the Moon. It is also the hottest and most inhospitable planet in the entire solar system. The ground temperature of Venus is, at least, 480°C - hot enough to melt even lead.

On an average, the hold of the space shuttle is 18 m long and 4 m wide. The shuttle can carry about 29 tonnes of cargo and bring back 15 tonnes to the Earth.

The temperature of the Sun's surface is about 6000°C which makes it impossible for anyone to explore it, on site. From the Earth we can only see the photo sphere, the most external zone of the Sun.

The diameter of the Sun is 109 times larger than the diameter of the Earth.

Antares is known to be the biggest star, which is 700 times as large as our Sun.

It is believed that up to 30,000 tonnes of cosmic dust are deposited on the Earth each year.
