LERNING OBJECTIVES This lesson will help you to:—
  • study about living and non-living things.
  • learn about the features of living and non living
  • differentiate between living and non-living thing.
  Real life examples
  • A teddy bear cannot grow so it is a non-living thing.
  • A car cannot move on its own so it is non – living thing.
QUICK CONCEPT REVIEW Have you noticed the different things around you? For example tables, chairs, toys, plants, birds etc. Some of these things can grow in size but some cannot. For Example;  Plants can grow but toys can't. They have same size throughout the life. This is because plants are living I and toys are non-living. Let us understand the difference between living and: non-living things.                                    Living Things: Living things have life. They can move on their own, think and grow. They need food, air and water to live.             For Example: Plants, animals (Dog, Cow, Cat, Birds Flowers, Butterfly etc.)  A small plant grows in sized and becomes a big tree.                There are so many things which remain same in size after so many years. They do not grow because they are non-living. Non – living things: Non – living things do not have life. They can’t move from one place to another on their own. They cannot eat and grow. For example: television, sofa, teddy, bear, Aeroplane, fan, car, etc. Try this Keep your teddy vear and a plan in the flower pot in your drawing room. After a weeks’ time what will you notice? The teddy bear will remain same in size whereas the plant will grow in size. Do you know the reason behind this?

QUICK CONCEPT REVIEW: Have you noticed your green friends on the way while coming to school, on the road side in the garden and it the park. These are the plants which give us clean & fresh air let us study more about plants. Plant: plants are green in colour. They gives us sweet fruits, vegetables and beautiful flowers For example PARTS OF PLANT Plants consists of different parts. Each of the part pays a very important role: The different parts of a plant are: Root, Stem, Leaves, Flower, Fruit
  • Roots: Roots are the lowest part of a plant that grows inside the surface of soil. It holds the plant to the soil.
  • Stem: Stem is the part of plant which grows above the surface of soil. It bears leaf, flower, & fruit. Stems provide support to the upper part of plant.
  • Leaves: Leaves are the green part of plant where food is made. Leaves are of different shapes sizes & colors.
  • Flower: Flowers are the most colourful part of a plant. Flowers are of different shapes, sizes & colours. Flower changes into fruit.
  • Fruit: Fruit is the fleshy & eatable part of a plant. Example: Apple, Mango, Water-melon. Fruits contain seeds. Some fruits like mango have one seed. Papaya and water – melon have many seeds. Seeds give rise to a new plant.
  •   Real life examples
    • Commonly found flowers.

    • Commonly used vegetables.
Misconcept/Concept: Misconcept: Tomato is a vegetable      Concept: Tomato is NOT a vegetable, it is a fruit as it contains seeds. It can be consumed in different ways as raw, in salad, sauces, juices etc. Misconcept: Cauliflower is a vegetable Concept: Cauliflower actually an immature flower a head. This flower is used as vegetable.    Historical preview Tuisi is an important herb. It has been used since ancient times because of its medicinal as well as spiritual value. Herbs are used in foods, flavors, medicines and perfumes.         TYPES OF PLANT You might have noticed that some plants are very big & some are small and some are very small. On the basis of size, plants can be of 3 different types: Herbs, Shrubs and trees. Herbs: herbs are very small plants with soft stem. For example: Tulsi, coriander, grass, etc. Shrubs: shrubs are the small woody plant with short, bushy stem. For example: hibiscus (china rose), rose Trees: Big and tall plants are called trees. Trees have strong & long branches. For example: Mango, Neem, Banyan Note: Beside these, two other types of plants are climbers and creepers.   more...

    • study about the importance of air and water.
    • learn about different types of seasons.
    • know about Sun, moon and stars.
QUICK CONCEPT REVIEW: Have you filled air in your bicycle or in footballs. Air gives shape to objects. Let us know more about Air. 1. AIR: Air is present all around us. We feel the air when it moves but we can't see air. All living things need air to breathe. Without air, there will be no life on the earth.   Uses of Air:
    • Plants and animals need air to breathe.
    • Air can fill balloon, football etc.
    • Air has weight.
    • Fire needs air to burn
Air cannot be seen, we can only feel air. Moving air is called wind. The slow moving wind is called breeze. The fast moving wind is called storm which can damage your house   2. WATER: Water is needed for life. Plants and animals need water. Water is present in oceans, river lakes, ponds.   We need water for drinking, bathing, cooking and washing.     WATER CONSERVATION: Water is very essential for our life. Life not possible without water. Water can stored in dams, wells, ponds, rivers, lakes etc. We should not waste water. Water can be reused for various purposes such as cleaning, washing, irrigation etc. This is called water conservation.  a) SUMMER: In summers, days are very hot. We wear cotton clothes in summer. b) AUTUMN: In this weather, trees shed their leaves. The weather neither too hot nor too c) SPRING: In this weather, new leaves grow on trees and different flowers bloom. d) WINTER: In this weather, days and night are very cold. We wear woollen clothes in winter. e) MONSOON: In this weather, it rains heavily.   We need raincoat and umbrella in this weather.     Weather depends upon Sun, clouds and wind.   1. SUN: Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The Sun is round and very hot. It is very big. It gives us light and heat. Sun is also a star.   2. MOON: The Moon shines at night. The Moon looks like a big white ball. The shape of the Moon changes every night. Moon does not have its own light more...

Number Sense   LEARNING OBJECTIVES This lesson will help you to:-
    • understand numbers from 0 to 99.
    • understand one digit and 2-digit numbers.
    • understand missing numbers.
    • understand the numbers coming after, before and in-between the given numbers.
    • learn about place value of numbers.
    • learn how to write number name.
    • compare numbers.
    • understand backward and skip counting.
QUICK CONCEPT REVIEW ZERO Zero is the first number in the counting and it is written as 0. The number zero represents having no value. This can be understand by following example:
    1. Suppose there are 5 birds sitting on the branch of the tree.
    2. Out of 5 birds, 2 fly away, so now 3 birds are sitting on the branch of the tree.
    3. The remaining birds also fly away and now there are zero birds on the branch.
Numbers from 0 to 9 are called one digit numbers. Numbers from 10 to 99 are called two digit numbers.   Amazing Facts 0 is the least number, 9 is the largest 1 digit number and 10 is the smallest 2 digit number.   Historical Preview Zero is the only number which cannot be represented in Roman. Zero was discovered by an Indian Mathematician named Aryabhatta.   NUMBER LINE Arrangement of numbers from left to right in a line in increasing order is called number line. For example numbers from 0 to 10 are shown in the number line as following. Number line is useful in addition and subtraction and also tells the relation between the numbers. We will learn about number line in higher classes.   PLACE VALUE OF A NUMBER In any two digit number first number from right is called ones and more...

Addition and Subtraction   LEARNING OBJECTIVES This lesson will help you to:-
    • understand the concept of addition and subtraction
    • add 1 digit and 2 digit numbers (up to 20)
    • subtract 1 digit and 2 digit numbers (up to 20)
    • add and subtract numbers without using paper and pencil.
QUICK CONCEPT REVIEW Suppose, you have 3 chocolates and you friend has given you 2 more chocolates. Now, how many chocolates you have? Addition helps us to solve the problem. Total number of chocolates can be calculated by adding all the chocolates. Let us discuss about addition in detail.   ADDITION Putting things together is called addition. When we add, we combine two or more numbers to make a new number. Which is known as ‘sum’. ‘+’ is the sign of addition. This sign is called plus sign.   ADDING TWO NUMBERS Let us understand with the help of an example: Tiya makes 5 paper boats and floats them in the pond. John makes 3 paper boats and floats them in the pond.   How many paper boats are there in the pond? This problem can be solved by adding the number of boats made by Tiya and John.   Amazing Facts If you add up the number 1-100 consecutively (1+2+3+4+5…) the total is 5050. The opposite side of a die always add up to seven (7).   Real Life Examples Addition helps to get the total amount of money spend in buying things from grocery shop. Subtraction helps in calculating the pocket money left in our piggy bank.   METHODS OF ADDITION   1. Addition by counting, We can add the total numbers of boats present in the pond by counting all the boats one by one. 5 + 3 = 8   2. Addition using number line We have learnt about number line in previous chapter. Lets discuss how number line helps in adding two numbers. For example. Minki the cat, wants to add 4 and 2. Minki starts from 4 and reaches 2 steps ahead by jumping one step at a time Minki reaches at number 6, i.e. 4 + 2 = 6.   3. Addition of zero and one to a number On adding zero to a number, we get the number itself. 7 + 0 = 7 On adding 1 to a number, we get the number that comes just after it. 7 + 1 = 8   4. Addition by forward counting: To add 2 to 7, count 2 numbers after 7. To add 7 to 12, count 7 numbers after 12. Historical Preview The plus (+) and (-) signs are mathematical symbols used to represents addition and subtraction. These words are originated from latin term which means more and less respectively   To add 5 more...

Spatial Understanding LEARNING OBJECTIVES This lesson will help you to:-
    • understand spatial relationship.
    • Locate position of things.
QUICK CONCEPT REVIEW Spatial is something related to space and the position of objects within it. Words like top, bottom, near, far, below, above, inside, outside, on, under, after and before help us to describe the position of different objects around us. So, are called position words.   FOR EXAMPLE
    • Whenever you ask you mother, “Where is my bag?” Or “Where is my book?”
    • She replies by saying, “It is on the table” Or “It inside the cupboard”
    • The answer will always be a position word.
Let us understand more about the position words with the help of an example. Anshul and his friends decided to play with a ball in the park. There is an argument between Anshul and his friends that the box is ‘in’ the table or ‘on’ the table.  In this picture, box is kept on the bench and the ball is under the bench. Here, space – Park, Objects- ball and box, Position (words) “under” and “on”.   Let us discuss some examples of objects which are on the ‘top’, ‘on’, ’inside’, ’above’, ’before’ and of the objects which are the ‘bottom’, ‘under’, ’outside’, ’below’, ’after’.   EXAMPLES 1.   2. 3.   4. 5. 6.   Real Life Examples: The birds are sitting on the top of the tree.                    The dustbin is placed in the park. Amazing Facts Do you know: Our universe is an example of spatial relationship where sun, star and moon (that you see in the sky) are present in the universe where sun and moon are near the earth and stars are far away from the earth.
