Red Fort or Lal Qila as it is more popularly known is a masterpiece of architecture and one of the most haunting spots for tourists from both India and abroad. Before the mutiny of 1857, the fort presented an altogether different picture from what it presents today because only about one-fourth of the imposing structure is accessible to visitors with the rest of the area being under the control of the Indian Army, which continues the occupation begun after the uprising of 1857 was suppressed. In 1858, a large number of palaces in the fort were demolished, many of the taikhanas (basement rooms) sealed and massive barracks constructed for the soldiers. Before 1857, the fort was a mini-city with palaces, offices, workshops and halls of audience where about 3,000 people lived. Today more than 10,000 visitors come to savour the magnificence of the building every day. There are 15 distinct more...

What is global warming and how is it affecting the Earth and its inhabitants? Global Warming is sometimes referred to as the Greenhouse Effect. The Greenhouse Effect is the absorption of energy radiated from the Earth's surface by Carbon Dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere, causing the atmosphere to become warmer. The Greenhouse Effect is what is causing the temperature on the Earth to rise and creating many problems that will begin to occur in the coming decades. For the last 10,000 years, the Earth's climate has been extraordinarily beneficial to mankind. Humans have prospered tremendously well under a benign atmosphere. Today, however, major changes are taking place. People are conducting an inadvertent global experiment by changing the face of the entire planet. We are destroying the Ozone Layer, which allows life to exist on the Earth's surface. All of these activities are unfavorably altering the’ composition of the more...

The idea of putting another human to death is hard to completely fathom. The physical mechanics involved in the act of execution are easy to grasp, but the emotions involved in carrying out a death sentence on another person, regardless of how much they deserve it, is beyond understanding. However, this act is sometimes necessary and it is our responsibility as a society to see that it is done. Opponents of capital or death punishment have basically four arguments. The first is that there is a possibility of error. However, the chance that there might be an error is separate from the issue of whether the death penalty can lie justified or not. If an error does occur, and an innocent person is executed, then the problem lies in the court system, not in the death penalty. Furthermore, most activities in our world, in which humans are involved, possess a more...

Freedom is often spoken of in what can be referred to as a 'loose sense.' One country has more freedom than another; a twenty-one year old has more freedom than a fifteen year old, but what exactly does this word, which is so often flippantly used, mean? Or, if this conclusion cannot be reached, what does it not mean? For different people it may mean different things, but there has to be an equilibrium that can be reached in order to determine the meaning of freedom itself. In one form, freedom can mean that a person has 'exemption from an obligation.' In another way, it can be interpreted that one is 'not under the control or power of another.' Perhaps it can be defined as having the liberty to choose who/what the ruler is to be. For, since nothing can exist without having some form of rule, if people were more...

Eliminating pollution from the environment has not proved as easy as eliminating it from the pages of a book. Industry is now spending several billion dollars a year on pollution control. The first problem in understanding air pollution is to decide what is and what is not an air pollutant. Many of the things generally considered pollutants are present in the natural air. The amount of a substance locally present in the air is clearly important in defining a pollutant. Also the amount of harm or inconvenience caused by the substance and how long it remains in the atmosphere. These three factors are known as the three T's (tonnage, toxicity and time in the atmosphere). A great deal of power is needed to run the factories of modern industrial nations. Automobiles, trains, planes and buses need power too. Nearly all of this power is produced in the same way—by burning more...
