An Incident

Category : Essays

Outline : Late night, driving my car; stranger; stop; lift; pistol; threatened; robbed me; went away. These days all sorts of incidents can take place. You cannot expect a thing to happen but it does happen. People know many ways to take money out of your pocket, but this all happens unexpectedly. When you are least cautious, when you take pity on some one; he robs you. He takes an undue advantage of your sympathy and kindness. To whom we should be kind. To whom we should not be. You get a jolt of your life. You are left as a foolish person. You promise in your heart of hearts never to help anyone, come what may. But by then, it is too late.
Late night's coming and going is also very risky. You may meet a stranger. He may try to convince all traits of humanity and innocence. He may appear a thorough gentleman. But is reality he is a rogue. He is a dare devil person. He misuses your goodness, you have helped him. But now he is looting you at gun point. You are helpless. He helps vacate your pockets. He removes you watch and ring. You are robbed and the world around you laughs at you. Is it not paradoxical ? (absurd statement which is true)
A few days ago, I was coming in my car from Sonepat (Haryana).  was on the steering wheel. I switched on the tape recorder and began enjoying the choicest music. The time was 11 O' clock, almost mid-night. As soon, I crossed the Delhi-Haryana border, a gentleman of very good appearance, smartly dressed, holding a suitcase stopped my car. He
requested me for a lift. I took pity on him and offered him the back seat of the car. He tried to be friendly with me. I was happy that the journey   would be easy. I had a co-passenger. The late hours will not be no problem  at all. He enquired from me about my percentage, the place of work, nature   of work, my monthly income, position in society, purpose of the journey    at this odd hours of night, etc. I, as a frank and unsuspecting man, gave him all the answers. He was getting quite closer to me. I did not know when he changed his seat from back to the front. I felt his breath even. He pretended to be a good and honorable man, but in fact he was a robber. It was his way of looting the simple-minded car owners. He appeared to be    a very interesting person. I was taken by his oily talks,
Having finished his talk he bent, opened his suitcase and took out a pistol-like object. It thought he was showing it to me and telling me that he kept it for safety. I was doubly happy that I had a stranger who by now had become friendly with me, bore (carried) a pistol. In this venture, the safety of the two of us was ascertained. But I was badly mistaken.
When a deserted place came, he aimed the same pistol at me and threatened to kill me. There was a sudden change of voice in him. From a friend, he became a terrorist, I thought for a moment that he was joking with me. He was least serious. But he grew angry, caught hold of my collar, slapped me. Now it was really very serious. I at once  concluded that I was duped by a dodger (cheat). The car stopped with a jerk.
He himself began to feel my pockets. Whatever money I had on my person, he removed it as if it were his own. While alighting he snatched the Japanese tape - recorder which had cost me 3000 rupees. It pained me a lot, I wanted to cry for help, but the darkness of the night frightened me. The road was silent and still. I was standing all alone by my car badly shaken; a victim of my own simple gullible (easily convinced) nature. I was cheated because of my kind and helping attitude.
