AN ELECTION SCENE

Category : Essays

Election is the process by which representatives are elected by the vote to form government. Hence elections are highly
important for a nation. Our nation makes progress if the decided representatives are men of high moral character but if they are selfish and irresponsible, there is no one who can save the nation from its downfall. Elections are held after every fixed period of time to elect suitable representatives to carry on the government. In India they are held in every fifth year. Though I have seen many elections but I can't forget the election which were held in the year 2000 in my constituency.
Different political parties took part in the elections. Preparations started a month in advance. The candidates of all the parties were busy in making promises to the public in order to win their favour. Apart from making promises they were also criticizing one another to highlight their own image as it happens. In that election too there were several candidates
who did not belong to any political parties and candidates who belonged to this or that political parties.
Weeks before the election canvassing began with flags of the parties. There was hue and cry everywhere as jeeps with loud speakers and processions heated the election atmosphere. Pamphlets and hand bills were freely distributed and stuck upon walls.
As the day of the election approached, the canvassing gathered momentum. Soon the candidates were seen moving from door to door to win the heart of the common people.
A day before the election, massive preparations were made at different polling centres. There was proper arrangement of law and order too so that unwanted situations might be averted. And finally the day of election came. Voting started in the morning in the presence of the presiding officer and the polling officer. There was great hustle and bustle around the polling station. Voters came in large numbers inside the booth they  were identified and a mark was being placed against their names in the voters list. Then they were asked to make cross opposite the symbol of their candidate on ballot papers in secret and then drop in the box.
There was great rush of the voters till one p.m. It was marked that the voters were highly excited to cast their vote in favour of their candidates. But after 2 p.m. the rush gradually vanished and the atmosphere was comparatively quiet. However voters in two's and three's continued to come till 5 p.m.
The picture focuses on the real democratic way of a country. It shows us how people independently take part in . election and cast their votes through which they elect their representative to govern the nation. No doubt the election
scenario has been changed to some extent due to the entry of unsocial and criminal elements. But it does not mean that
the election is totally a farce. It is after all the noble way to prove the significance of people's power.
