A Winter Day

India is a fortunate country in the world with well- Defined seasons that change with regularity in a natural Cycle. There are four major seasons, namely, the summer Season, the rainy season, the autumn season, and the winter season. Each season has its own characteristics winter charm. People are aware of it.

In fact, every season brings us pleasure or pain. We await, a particular season eagerly. And go through it patiently. We look forward to the next season, when the present season starts boring us. The winter season is a very healthful season. And doctors have lean days. But the poor are hard-pressed during this season. The winter season lasts roughly between November and February December and January being very cold months.

It was the month of January and it was extremely Cold   North India was in the grip of a cold wave. The sky was' overcast with grey clouds on this particular day and at times it rained heavily. Rain was followed by heailstorm.

The merucury recorded a steep fall and the temperature neared the freezing point. Everyone was shivering. The Roads stood deserted and people indoors were wrapped in heavy woolens. The poor clustered around burning Fires near their huts to warm themselves up. It was s Cold that old poor people were almost frozen and could not move. Young girls and boys would not move out of their bedrooms and lay wrapped in warm-up quilts with room heaters on.

School attendance was low. Very few people were out Of doors.   The poor shivered no end. The rich developed of doors and were having variety of food—they were eating, drinking and making merry. Endless cups of tea were being passed on. The bold dared to stir out for walks in the open. Contrast this with the poor who had to bear hardship by way of not enough clothing to bear the cold and not much to eat—it spelt near ruin for them.

Many offices reported poor attendance owing to inclement weather. Staff was almost on mass leave. The work in factories also came to a standstill, as poor , labourers could- not come out in scanty clothes.

They thought it would be wise to stay in their huts rather than venture out in biting cold. It was almost a freezing day.

Farmers in rural and semi-urban areas also could not work in the fields owing to intermittent rain. They tried to keep themselves warm by sitting around cowdung fires and besides the hookah. The atmosphere around was bleak and dreary. Nature was not kind on that day. It wanted people to stay indoors without much work to attend to. The poor lost their daily wages; there was not much sales in the marketplace. Businessmen too were forced to stay indoors. It was rather an abnormal day to reckon with in winter season.
