A Farewell Function

Category : Essays

It was my final year of school and I was to take the senior secondary examination of the CBSE. As is the Tradition, we the students of the 12th class were to be given a formal farewell. The date fixed was February 28.

On that day, we, the senior finalists, assembled in the School at 4 p.m. The school wore a festive look. The green Lawn was a welcome sight. The flower beds in the campus were colorful. The newly colour-washed school building looked magnificent. A shamiana was put up for the function the arrangement was to bid us farewell on the eve of' our departure from school.

We gathered under the shamiana. The principal was in the chair. There were long and short speeches. There were songs. The teachers too addressed the students.  They spoke feelingly about our conduct. All of them were giving advice   to us. Some tenth class students also spoke.

Then came monitor Ranvir Saini of 10A. He read out the fare-well address. It was a fine recital of our being role models to juniors. Our achievements in games and sports And debate were highlighted. How we had befriended Students of IX and X class. And also of the hopes they had of us in the board examination.

The address ended with the assurance that they would follow in our footsteps to keep up the high tradition of school.

Representing the XII class, in reply I told the students that the honoured the feelings expressed by them and we would try to live up to their high expectation.

Then the principal got up to speak. He too had words of sound advice for us. He hoped we would not forget the School- the alma mater—where we started our education.

He gave us blessings and told us that he and the members of staff will watch with pride the progress we make in life. After this we moved to the school lawns for group photo. We were entertained to tea and snacks. It was a well-arranged party. We profusely thanked our hosts and took leave of them.

It was our last day at school and some of us become emotional. I still remember the advice on different aspects of life given to us. It is standing us in good stead. , We have formed an old students Association— of girls and boys—and there is an annual get-together.

An After thought

Some Misconceptions about Essay Writing

Misconception : High-sounding, pedantic language stredded with rare-to-find words, casts Good impression on evaluator's mind.

Truth: Just opposite. An essay is a piece of writing that shows your ability to discuss, judge the pros and cons of a topic and present them in most possible arranged matter that is simple enough to be grasped by even the layman without a single hurdle.

So, avoid difficult terms unless it is compulsory to use them; make short sentences, go logical; avoid distraction, go straight; and conclude Impartially.
