The full name of Sardar Patel was Vallabhbhai Patel. The title 'Sardar' was, given to him by Mahatma Gandhi. Sardar Patel was one of the most illustrious sons of India. He was one of the greatest freedom fighters of our country.

After Independence, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India. He is generally called the "Iron Man of India". It is mainly because of his strong will and firm determination in the service of his motherland.

He was born in Karamsad village in Gujarat one October, 21, 1875. The name of his father was Jhaver Bhai Patel who was a brave, patriotic man, having fought in the army of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi against the British in 1857.

Sardar Patel got his early education in his village. Later, he went to Nadiad and then to Baroda to get higher education. His father was a poor peasant. Still, Sardar Patel somehow saved money and went to England where he studied law and became a barrister.

He was greatly influenced by Gandhiji and he jumped into politics in 1918. His first important achievement was the removal of the system of "Begar" from Gujarat.

Another of his achievement was his being successful in getting the grievances of the peasants redressed regarding payments of revenue even on the failure of their crops. This he got done through the Gandhian non-violent methods.

One of the greatest moments of his success came in regard to the Bardoli Satyagrah. It was this success that earned him the title "Sardar' from Gandhiji.

One of his greatest fortes was his ability to organize and manage. This was lucidly clear in all the campaigns he undertook.  He took an active part in the Quit India Movement in 1942. He went to jail several times in his life.

When India became free, he held the portfolio of the Home Minister along with being the Deputy Prime Minister. He had already held several positions before India became free. After Independence, his great achievement was the merger of more than six hundred princely states into the Indian Union. His police action in the erstwhile Hyderabad speaks volumes of his grit and statesmanship.
