 Environmentalist G.D. Agarwal, who was on a fast for the last 111 days demanding a clean Ganga, died after a heart attack in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The 86-year old former IIT-Kanpur professor, Agarwal had been on hunger strike for a pollution-free and uninterrupted flow in the Ganga.

 Legendary musician Annapurna Devi has passed away in Mumbai. She was 91. She was suffering from age-related issues. Annapurna Devi was an Indian surbahar player of Hindustani classical music and she was the daughter and disciple of Allauddin Khan. She was married to sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.

 Well-known Malayalam poet M N Paloor passed away at the age of 86-year due to age-related ailments. Paloor won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, the state’s highest literary honour, in 1983 for his collection ‘Kalikalam’.  He also received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his autobiography ‘Kathayillathavante Katha’ in 2013. Some of his major collections include ‘Kalikalam’, ‘Pedithondan’, ‘Theerthayathra’and ‘Bhangiyum Abhangiyum’.

 Eminent Gandhian Natwar Thakkar, popularly known as Nagaland’s Gandhi, died in a private hospital after a brief illness. He was 86. Mr. Thakkar, a Padma Shri awardee, had founded the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram at Chuchuyimlang. His efforts to spread Gandhian philosophy and peace had earned him the sobriquet ‘Nagaland’s Gandhi’. He was from Maharashtra and had made Nagaland his home ever since he had arrived in the State in 1955.

 Renowned harmonium player Pandit Tulsidas Borkar passed away in Mumbai. He was 84. He was being treated for chest infection. Born in Goa, Borkar made a name for himself as an accomplished harmonium player and was conferred with the Padma Shri award in 2016. He was also a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

 Legendary Chicago blues guitarist Otis Rush, whose passionate, a jazz-influenced sound influenced generations of musicians, has died. He was 84. Otis Rush won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Recording in 1999 for “Any Place I’m Going.” Rush was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984.

 Former BCCI president Biswanath Dutt, best known in the Indian cricket fraternity as Jagmohan Dalmiya’s mentor, passed away aged 92 after suffering from acute lung infection. Dutt was the BCCI president in 1989 after a six-year stint as the vice-president of the parent body from 1982-88. He is survived by his daughter and son Subrata Dutta, who is the senior vice-president of All India Football Federation. Having served IFA in different capacities in his tenure from 1963-1975, Dutt began his career in cricket administration as CAB(Cricket Association of Bengal) secretary in 1977 and became president in 1982.

 Renowned filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passed away in Mumbai. She was 64.  Lajmi, a director, producer and screenwriter, was known for working on real subjects. She was known for her women-oriented films like “Rudaali”, “Daman”, “Darmiyaan”.  Lajmi’s last movie as a director was “Chingaari” in 2006, based on a novel “The Prostitute and the Postman” by Bhupen Hazarika, who was her partner. Meanwhile, condolence messages are pouring in from the Bollywood world grieving the demise of Lajmi.

 Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang died aged 61 at a military hospital in the capital Hanoi following a period of illness. Quang was appointed the president, a largely ceremonial role, in April 2016, and served alongside Vietnam’s de facto leader Communist Party Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Before that, he served as minister of public security.

  India’s first woman IAS officer after Independence, Anna Rajam Malhotra, who served in the Madras State under then Chief Minister C. Rajagopalachari and at the Central government, died in Mumbai. She was 91. She later married R.N. Malhotra, who served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1985 to 1990. Ms. Malhotra joined the civil services in 1951 and opted for the Madras cadre.
