He joined West Ham in 1959 as a 15-year-old, made his debut in 1962 and was a key player in the side who won the 1965 Cup Winners Cup final at Wembley.

  Renowned Hindi author Ganga Prasad Vimal passed away in a road accident in Sri Lanka. He was born in 1939 in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. He wrote more than a dozen poetry collections, short story collections and novels. His last novel, Manushkhor, was published in 2013. He received several Hindi literary awards.

  Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Vidushi Savita Devi has passed away. She was known for her thumirs. She was the author of the book ‘Maa…Siddheshwari’ which was the biography of her mother Siddeshwari Devi. She was also the head of the music department at Daulat Ram College under Delhi University for many years.

  Kannada writer and critic L.S. Sheshagiri Rao passed away. His first work was Idu Jeevana, an anthology of short stories was released in 1948. He is best known for his book “Hosagannada Sahitya Charitre”. He was best known for his critical works and an English-Kannada dictionary that he compiled. Proficient in Kannada and English, many of his works were bridges between the two languages.

  The inventor of Universal Product Code(UPC) or Barcode, George Joseph Laurer, passed away. His barcode invention at IBM (International Business Machines) corporation, transformed the retail industries as well as other industries across the world. He worked as an electrical engineer with IBM in North Carolina’s research triangle park in the early 1970s. Barcode is a ubiquitous marking, composed of unique black bars and a 12-digit number, that allows retailers to identify products by means of scanning the code.
