Corruption is a deep-rooted menace that has eaten into the vitals of our society. There is hardly any sphere of social, economic, political and religious activity that is free from corruption of some kind. Corruption has become so common that most of the people have come to accept it as part of their life. Bribery and corruption has increased greatly after 1947. The growth of democracy and industry, the system of licenses and permits for setting up enterprises, securing quotas of law materials, imports and exports and expansion of trade and commerce is responsible for the increase in corruption. Stringent laws against corruption have proved to be effective in curbing this evil. Corruption flourishes as long as there are people who are prepared to give bribe and others who are prepared to accept it, directly or indirectly. Each one of us has a weakness for easy money. People are prepared to do an;-thing or stoop to any extent of taking graft in order to maintain their so-called standards of living. People who indulge in corruption maintain double standard. On the one hand they accept bribe and on the oilier they urge people to be honest and pure. Such hypocrisy compounds the offence. It is not difficult to locate the causes of corruption. Corruption generally breeds at the top and then gradually filters down to the lower levels. Gone are the days when people, who Joined politics were fired by the spirit of serving the nation. Those who suffered for the sake of getting their country freed from the foreigners, knew only how to make sacrifice. They had never expected any compensation for their sacrifices. Those were the times when only the selfless people joined politics. But unfortunately, the present day politics has become a business like any other business. The modern politicians are no longer motivated by an}' lofty ideals. In order to win elections, they spend huge sums of money with the hope that after they are elected, they would recover much more than what they had spent. When the people in power indulge in unscrupulous practices, a common man also indulges freely. Government after government have made promises to root out conniption from our public life but this evil lias persisted of course, there are honest officials but they are in minority. Let us as a nation, contemplate seriously as to what will happen when our public life is loaded with corruption. Certain amounts of introspection b those who are in power can only initiate the process of minimizing the evil of corruption in our country. If the public m general is indifferent, corruption would continue to grow us like cancer.

There have been many inventions of means of entertainment. We have radio, television, cinema. internet, computer and electronic games and many other things. Now is the turn of cable TV. As cable TV has provided all types of entertainment at our homes, cinema halls have suffered a setback. Many of them have been shut down even. It has given a big jolt to the film industry as well. Cable TV is not only a means of recreation, but also a means of knowledge. There are many programmes which are educative, informative and constructive. Many channels like Animal Planet, Discovery, news channels etc. telecast educative programmes for the enhancement of knowledge. Some serials, through their themes, teach us how we should lead a life of cooperation and happiness. There are some serials which throw light on the corrupt nature of the modern society. Even students can come to know that there are many people on the earth who wear white clothes but have black hearts. They can know the reality of man and his evil nature. They can keep away from evils and can make effort to cure and reform the society. In this way, cable TV is serving a great purpose. Cable TV has many disadvantages too. Students waste their precious time in watching movies and programmes on cable TV over prolonged hours. Thus they ignore and neglect their studies. Another evil is that the youth adopt evil ways and habits easily to which they are exposed through various serials. Children are innocent and they fail to sift the real from the unreal, the true from the untrue. Cable TV transports viewers to an imaginary world. They want to do what they see. However, cable TV cannot be held responsible for all these problems. It is a media entertainment and a very useful method of imparting education. Viewers should take precautions and exercise prudence; they should watch a mixture of different types of programmes in order to achieve their all-round personality development.

"Before ...the flying ambulance, we seldom saw men who had lost both legs and arms..." Dominique-Jean Larrey, surgeon Ambulances first began to appear on the Napoleonic battlefields of France in 1792. Their inventor, surgeon Dominique-Jean Larrey (1766-1842), had grown frustrated with regulations requiring him to stay to the rear. After observing how the mobility of the French artillery helped it to quickly disengage from an advancing enemy, Larrey proposed to the military hierarchy what he called an ambulance volante, or "flying ambulance," that would follow the artillery into battle and tend to the wounded where they fell. Larrey devised a horsedrawn wheeled carriage with a central compartment able to transport two patients comfortably on leather-covered horsehair mattresses; windows on either side provided good ventilation. Inside, patients could be moved in and out easily on floors seton rollers. Recessed areas contained medicines and medical equipment, and ramps at the rear doubled as emergency operating tables. Larrey and his team tended the wounded on the basis of their injuries rather than rank or status. Those likely to die from their wounds were set aside in favor of treating those who were deemed not to be mortally wounded—this brought the French word triage, meaning "sorting," into the surgeon's lexicon.

It is said some are born great, some become great and to some greatness is thrust upon. We see in every society, in every community, in every group of people, there is bound to be someone who emerges above others and who acts as a guide or a lead. The majority of people in this world are to be led, and to be shown the path they ought to tread. But a few are off from the rest and they can rule over the rest.  It is true that leaders are born, no doubt, but training may also play a vital role in developing qualities of leadership. Those who are born leaders feel an inner compulsion to perform great tasks and they successfully accomplish them. Born leaders need no training and they shape the destiny of others. Columbus was a born leader who had the qualities of leadership in undertaking voyages of exploration and discovery. Florence Nightingale was a born leader whom nothing could prevent from giving a lead to womankind and urging them to enter the noble profession of nursing. No formal training is needed for such gifted persons. But some sort of training is certainly very useful in the case of others who have in them innate qualities of leadership. If left to themselves, they would not probably emerge as leaders. This training is given to them during their student career, the most suitable period for the development of qualities of leadership. This training begins when a student is appointed the monitor of his class. The teacher who picks out a student for monitor ship finds in the boy a certain amount of courage and initiative The student gets a certain amount of  responsibility. In the discharge of his duties as a monitor, his innate courage and spirit of initiative find scope for expression and development. Courage and spirit of enterprise are among  the essential qualities of leadership. One of the best means of developing qualities of leadership among young men and women is to involve themselves in  games. Sports inculcate among the youth not only a sense of fair play but also such qualities as mutual cooperativeness or team spirit, endurance, and capacity to remain undaunted in the face of defeat. Extra-curricular activities in schools and colleges also provide opportunities to students to receive training in leader-  hip. Every college has a number of societies and associations for debating, for organizing tours, outings, excursions, and various other activities. The office-bearers of these societies and associations are leaders though in limited spheres. Nevertheless they get excellent training in enforcing discipline, in organizing functions, in taking initiative and showing their spirit of enterprise. They also get training in public speaking. The ability to address audience is one of the most essential qualities of a leader in any field of life-political, social, military, etc. Elections to college unions are another means of training leaders. The presidents and secretaries of college unions get many opportunities of developing their organizational ability. They more...

Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi was a great patriot, she was born at Bitur on June'15,1834. She was named Manu Bai. In her childhood  she learnt the use of weapons. She had warlike qualities. She was a clever horse rider and a clever archer. She was married to Raja Ganga Dhar Rao of Jhansi. After her marriage she was named Rani Lakshmi Bai. She could not enjoy the pleasures of married life. She became widow after two years of her marriage. She had no issue. She wished to adopt a son. Lord Dalhausi, the Governor General of India, did not allow her to do so. He wanted to make Jhansi a part of British India. Lakshmi Bai stood against him. She opposed foreign rule. She refused to obey the orders of Governor-General. She adopted a son and declared herself independent. Nana Sahib, Tantia Tope and Kanwar Singh were waiting for a chance. They joined hands with Rani. Naya Khan demanded seven lakhs of rupees from the Rani. She sold her ornaments to dispose him off. This traitor joined the British. He again attacked Jhansi. The Rani rose against Naya Khan and the British. She filled the heart of her soldiers with the spirit of heroism. She fought bravely and defeated her enemy. Jhansi was again invaded in 1857. Rani was asked to surrender, but she refused to do so. The result was that the city was destroyed and captured by the British. But Rani was still firm. At the news of Tantia Tope's death she said,"So long as there is a drop of blood in my veins and a sword in my hand, no foreigner dare to spoil the sacred land of Jhansi." Soon after this Lakshmi bai and Nana Sahib captured Gwalior. But one of her chiefs Dinkar Rao proved traitor. So they had to leave Gwalior. Now Rani began to organize a new army. But she had not enough time to do so. Col. Smith attacked her with a large army. She fought bravely and heroically, she got a very bad wound. So long as she lived, she kept the flag of independence flying. The Indians lost the First War of Independence. But Rani of  Jhansi sowed the seeds of Independence and heroism. India will never forget her name. She is immortal.
