 The Uttarakhand Government has approved the design of a glass floor suspension bridge, the first of its kind in the country to have a floor made of toughened transparent glass. This bridge will be built across the River Ganga in Rishikesh. The bridge is as an alternative to the iconic Lakshman Jhula, almost 94 years old, which was closed in 2019 due to safety reasons. The bridge design has been prepared by the Public Works Department (PWD).

  International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed globally on 11 February. International Day of Women and Girls in Science to recognize the critical role of women and girls play in science and technology. In December 2015, the United Nations adopted a resolution to celebrate February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In 2016 is the first time it was celebrated. The idea behind this day is to ensure equal participation and involvement of women and girls in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

 Noted cricket journalist and film historian Raju Bharatan passed away. Bharatan, who wrote on Indian cricket and Bollywood music, worked for a weekly features magazine, The Illustrated Weekly of India, and an Indian films weekly newspaper, Screen.

  Hindi novelist and Padma Shri awardee Giriraj Kishore passed away. He was best known for his novel ”Pehla Girmitiya” that was based on Mahatma Gandhi”s stay in South Africa. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India and was the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award. He was also conferred the Vyas Samman in 2000, and an honorary PhD by Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University in 2002.

 On February 10, 2020, the Department of Public Enterprises operating under Ministry of Heavy Industries tabled the “Public Enterprises Survey” on the parliament. The report says that the net profit from the PSUs has increased by 15.5% as compared to the previous year.
  • Highlights
The survey said that Indian Oil Corporation, NTPC and ONGC were the top three profitable PSUs in 2018-19. On the other hand, MTNL, BSNL and Air India were the highest loss-making PSU. Also, the survey noted that these three PSUs have been making losses for three consecutive years. The report also said that total income from Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) in the year 2018-19 was 24 lakh crore rupees. It was 20 lakh crore rupees the previous year. There has been an increase of 4.67%
  • Relative performance
The enterprises such as MSTC, Chennai Petroleum Corporation and State Trading Corporation that were making profit last year (2017-18) incurred loss in the fiscal year 2019 (2019-19). There are a total of 348 CPSEs. Out of these 249 are operational, 13 are under closure or liquidation and 86 are under construction.

  Sweden’s Pole Vaulter, Armand Duplantis has break the Pole Vault World Record set by Renaud Lavillenie of France in 2014. Armand Duplantis break the world record with a jump of 20 feet 2.9 inches or 6.17 metres at Copernicus Cup in Torun, Poland. Renaud Lavillenie set the previous world record of 6.16 metres in February 2014 in Donetsk, Ukraine.

 Kaamya Karthikeyan has become the youngest girl in the world to summit Mt Aconcagua. Mt Aconcagua is the highest peak in South America and outside of Asia. Kaamya Karthikeyan is a class VII student and summited Argentinian mountain which is 6962 meters tall. Kaamya Karthikeyan summited the Mt Aconcagua peak on February 1, 2020 and unfurled the tricolour on the mountain peak. She has also scaled the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, and Australia in the past, which includes two peaks with heights of over 6000 meters above the sea level.

  The Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre (LSRC) Red won the first Men’s section Khelo India Ice Hockey tournament 2020. They defeated Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team 3-2 in a nail-biting thriller final match. 13 teams participated in the Khelo India Ice Hockey Championship. Khelo India is an initiative taken by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to aware people about the importance of sports and fitness. The ultimate goal of the program is to develop India as a sporting nation and to promote sports in the country.

 The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved the funding of USD 2 million to combat the spread of novel coronavirus (nCoV). The funds will support the efforts to stop the outspread of novel coronavirus (nCoV) by supplementing ongoing regional technical assistance and strengthening response capacity in China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar. The funds will also help in boosting the supply of diagnostic and laboratory equipment for rapid testing to help in fight against the outbreak. The assistance will fund the development of recommendations for improved outbreak investigation and surveillance, including in rural areas, and the strengthening of health systems’ resilience and capacity for epidemic response. ADB in collaboration with World Health Organisation and other regional experts will also recognize the areas for coordinated responses as well as possible further financial assistance to improve the situation caused by nCoV.

 The 5th edition of Dhaka Art Summit was inaugurated in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This summit was inaugurated by State Minister for Cultural Affairs of Bangladesh KM Khalid. More than 500 artists, sculptors, architects and art professionals from various countries are participating in the Summit. The Summit will also feature live events, panel discussions and puppet shows among other things. This year’s programmes also include a special exhibition on the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to pay tribute to Bangabandhu on the occasion of his birth centenary. Dhaka Art Summit is the premier art festival of Bangladesh.
