 The Union government has announced a package of more than Rs 8,000 crore aimed to provide relief to sugarcane farmers and to clear their dues. According to a government official, the package includes three elements. A buffer stock of 30 LMT (lakh metric tonnes) of sugar will be created with Rs 1,200 crore. This money will be directly transferred to accounts of sugarcane farmers. Rs 4,400 crore will be used to increase ethanol production to divert sugarcane away from sugar mills which are unable to dispose of their inventories. The government has also decided to ensure a minimum sale price of Rs 29/kg for sugar.

 In Uttarakhand, Polythene will be completely prohibited from 31st July in the state. All the polythene vendors have been asked to finish the polyethylene stock before 31st July. In Dehradun on the occasion of World Environment Day, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat stated, a comprehensive public awareness campaign will be launched on environmental damage caused by polythene, one week before the entire ban on polythene in the state.

 A meeting between external affairs ministers of India, Brazil and South Africa was organized in Pretoria, South Africa. This ministerial summit chaired by India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was attended by South African Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu and the Brazilian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Bezerra Abbott Galvao. The outcome of this meeting was a document titled IBSA Declaration on South-South Cooperation. This document calls for contribtion of each of the member of IBSA forum to contribute to greater understanding of development cooperation as a common endeavour of the global South.

IBSA Dialogue Forum, comprising India, Brazil, South Africa, is a tripartite group which supports promotion of cooperation in various fields between these three important poles of South-South cooperation. Main objective of IBSA include:
  • To promote South-South cooperation by making an important axis between three important countries of three continents viz. India, Africa and South America.
  • To build consensus on issues of international importance such as UN and UNSC reforms and reforms in Brettonwoods Organizations.
  • To increase trade / exchange of information opportunities between the three countries and their efforts in international poverty alleviation and social development.
IBSA was established in 2003 via Brasilia Declaration by external affairs ministers of India, Brazil and South Africa.

 World Environment Day is the United Nations' (UN) most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth. World Environment Day occurs on the 5th of June every year. Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for the World Environment Day 2018, "Beat Plastic Pollution".

 A French swimmer has set off from Japan aiming to become the first person to swim across the Pacific Ocean. Ben Lecomte will swim for eight hours a day for more than six months as he heads towards the US west coast. He is hoping to raise awareness for climate change. A team of scientists will conduct research during the almost 8,850-kilometre swim.

 The Centre has appointed MK Jain, Managing Director, and CEO of IDBI Bank, as the RBI’s Deputy Governor.Jain will fill a position that had been lying vacant since August 2017 after the retirement of SS Mundra. With the appointment of Jain, the Centre has stuck to the tradition of having a commercial banker occupy this post of RBI Deputy Governor (reserved for bankers). The central bank now has four serving RBI Deputy Governors. Jain has been appointed for a term of three years.

 The government has announced the launch of 'Krishi Kalyan Abhiyaan' under which farmers in select villages will be given assistance and advice on ways to improve farming techniques and raise their income.  The Agriculture Ministry in line with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of doubling farmers’ income by 2022 has launched the Krishi Kalyan Abhiyaan from 1st June to 31st July 2018.

 Environment-friendly, clean and equipped with amenities of international standards for tourists, 13 Indian beaches will soon get the Blue Flag certification. These beaches of Odisha, Maharashtra and other coastal states will be the first in not just India, but in Asia, to get the Blue Flag certification. The Indian beaches are being developed by the Society for Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM), an environment ministry's body working for the management of coastal areas.

 Eminent scientist S Christopher has completed his term as the chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra was given additional charge of the post. Mr Christopher was in May 2015 appointed as Director General of the DRDO for a two-year term. He was then working as Distinguished Scientist and Programme Director (airborne early warning and control system) and Director, Centre for Air-Borne Systems in the DRDO.

 India's Sanjana Ramesh was awarded the 'Most Valuable Player' (MVP) even as compatriot Vaishnavi Yadav won the 'Girls Grit Award' on the fourth and final day of Basketball Without Borders Asia 2018, which featured 66 campers from 16 countries from the Asia-Pacific region. The camp got underway with the girls championship game between the New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx. Coached on the sidelines by Ruth Riley and Sakshi Sheoran, the Lynx defeated the Liberty 20-13.
