SSC CGL Main Examination contains questions (Usually 3) based on spelling test. These questions are usually asked in two different ways. In the first type of questions four words are given. The aspirants are required to choose the correctly spelt word. In the second type of questions the aspirants are required to choose the misspelt word.

These questions are designed to test the aspirant's ability to write words with their correct spellings. This is a very important part of written English. Misspelt words show the lack of knowledge and carelessness of the writer.

Some Important Rules

Here are a few rules to spell the words. Keep these rules in mind. Knowing some basic rules of English spelling can eliminate many common mistakes which generally happen.

Rule 1 Whether ie or ei Remember the following poem

to decide if a word should be spelt ie or ei.

Put i before e, except after c.

Or when it sound like a.

As in neighbour or neigh.

Rule 2 Doubling A Consonant Follow these steps to

decide if a final consonant needs to be doubled when a suffix or verb ending is added.

If the word is one syllable or is stressed on the last syllable.

And has a single final consonant.

And that single final consonant is preceded by a single vowel.

And the suffix begins with a vowel.

Then, double the final consonant.

There is a single final consonant 1

The final consonant has a vowel before it o

The suffix able, begins with-a vowel.

Therefore, you double the 1 before adding the suffix. Write controllable

e.g., occur-occurring, swim-swimming, ship-shipping

Now see

enter + ing

The stress is on the first syllable-en-not the last.

Therefore, you do not double the final consonant.

Write entering

Rule 3 Handling final e when adding a suffix or verb ending.

If the suffix or verb ending is a vowel, drop the final letter.

e.g., amuse + ing = amusing,

create-creating, type - typing, bake- baking

If the suffix or verb ending begins with a consonant,

keep the final e.

measure + ment

= measurement, definite + ly = definitely

Rule 4 Adding a suffix or verb ending with words ending in y.

If the word has a consonant before the y, change the

y to i.

mercy + less = merciless

If the word has a vowel before the y, keep the y.

employ + ed = employed

Rule 5 Words ending in two vowels (a vowel + final e) retain the final vowel (e) before adding a suffix. (see/seeable, shoe/shoeing, canoe/canoeing)

Rule 6 For words ending in c, insert k before adding-in or-y (picnic/picnicking, traffic/trafficking, panic/panicky).

Rule 7 To retain the soft sound of the c (s sound) and of the g (j sound) in words ending in ce and ge, we keep the final e (peace/peaceable, replace/replaceable, arrange/ arrangement; advantage/advantageous, notice/ noticeable, change/changeable)

Rule 8 Pluralising Noun Most of the nouns in English spell their plural by simply adding a final-s. Nouns that are no count or abstract (e.g., cheese, sugar, honesty, intelligence) generally take a singular verb but in some instances can be plural, in which case they follow the rules for plural based on their spelling. Also, there are some categories of words which are only plural, even though their spelling does not reflect this. Words that end in ss, sh, ch or x add es.

pass-passes, buzz-buzzes, coax-coaxes,

wash- washes, watch - watches

Words that have a consonant before. a final y,

change that y to i before adding es.

Most nouns ending in f or fe add s. However, some change the f to v and add s or es.

There is no rule to follow here.

belief = beliefs

half = halves, calf = calves

Most nouns ending in o add z. However, some add es.

There is no rule to follow in this case.

Rule 9 The spelling of a word does not change when you add a prefix to it even when the first letter of the word and the last letter of the prefix are the same.

miss + step = misstep

pre + eminent =preeminent

un + necessary = unnecessary

Rule 10 No rule for irregular plurals. These just need to be memorised.
