Which of the following is not used to distinguish ethene from ethane?

    A)  iodine in \[\text{CC}{{\text{l}}_{4}}\]

    B)  bromine in\[\text{CC}{{\text{l}}_{4}}\]

    C)  alkaline \[\text{KMn}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\]

    D)  ammonical \[\text{C}{{\text{u}}_{\text{2}}}\text{C}{{\text{l}}_{\text{2}}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

\[{{\text{I}}_{\text{2}}}\text{/CC}{{\text{l}}_{\text{4}}}\text{,B}{{\text{r}}_{\text{2}}}\text{/CC}{{\text{l}}_{\text{4}}}\] and alkaline \[\text{KMn}{{\text{O}}_{4}}\]are used to test for unsaturation, therefore,   these   tests   are   only performed by ethene. Ammonical \[\text{C}{{\text{u}}_{\text{2}}}\text{C}{{\text{l}}_{\text{2}}}\]is not used to distinguish ethane from ethane. It is used to distinguish ethene from ethyne.
