Tense is the form of a verb, which shows the time of action and its degree of completeness. Tense gives us the knowledge of the time when an action is taking place.  

Look at the following sentences:

  •   You are looking perturbed.
  •   The final report will exonerate him.
  •   You had misread him.

In sentence 1, the verb 'are looking' shows an action done in the present time.

In sentence2, the verb 'will exonerate' shows the state of being in the future time.

In sentence 3, the verb 'had misread' shows an action done in the past time.
