What is Blood Relation?

Blood relation is biological relation. Remember a wife and husband are not biologically related but they are biological parents of their own children. Similarly, brother, sister, paternal grandfather, paternal grandmother, maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, grandson, grandmother, niece, cousin etc. are our blood relatives.

Types of Blood Relations

There are mainly two types of blood relations:

(i) Blood relation from paternal side

(ii) Blood relation from maternal side

Now, we will discuss both kind of relations one by one.

Blood Relation From Paternal Side

This type of blood relation can be further subdivided into three types:

• Past generations of father

Example: Great grandfather, great grandmother, grandfather, grandmother etc.

• Parallel generations of father

Examples: Uncles (brothers of father), aunts (sisters of father) etc.

• Future generations of father

Examples: Sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters etc.

Blood Relation From Maternal Side

This type of blood relations can also be subdivided into three types:"

• Past generations of mother

Examples: Maternal great grandfather, maternal great grandmother, maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother etc.

• Parallel generations of mother

Examples: Maternal uncles, maternal aunts etc.

• Future generations of mother

Examples: Sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters etc.

Important Points to Remember

(1) Without the information of gender, no relationship can be established between two people. For example, if given that R Is the child of P and Q, then we can only say that P and Q are the parents of R, But we cannot find out the following.

• R is the son of P and Q. or R is the daughter of P and Q,
• Who is the mother of R and who is the father of R.

But if it is given that P is a male, Q, is a female and R is male, then we can easily say that R is the son of P and Q. Further, we can also say that P is the father of R and Q. is the mother of R«

(2) Gender cannot be decided on the basis of name. For example, in sikh community the names like Manjit, Sukhvinder etc. are the names of both male and female. Similarly, hi the Hindu community 'Suman' is the name of both male and female.

Solution Tips

• While solving blood relation based questions, first of all find out that two person between whom a relationship has to be established.
• Next, try to find out middle relation.
• Finally find out the relationship between two persons to be identified for this purpose.

Types of Problems

• General problems of blood relation
• Blood relations based on family tree

Now, we will discuss the two types of problems one by one:-

General problems of Blood Relation

In such problems, one sentence information is given. Such as.

Pointing towards a photograph, Mr. Sharma said, “she is the only daughter of mother of my mother’s sister”.

Explanation: Here, we have to find relationship between Mr. Sharma and the lady in the photograph. Mother of my brother's sister does mean my (Mr. Sharma's) mother. Only daughter of Mr. Sharma's mother does mean "sister of Mr. Sharma".

Look at the following examples.

Example 1

Pointing to a girl in a photograph, Amit said, "This girl is the daughter of my mother".

Explanation: Here, it is clear that the girl in the photograph is the daughter of Amit's mother. We know daughter of mother is the sister. Therefore, the girl in the photograph is the sister of Amit.

Example 2

Seeing a woman on the road. Rahul said to his friend, "There goes the wife of my father"

Explanation: Remember that father's wife is always mother. Here, the sentence 'wife of my father' makes it clear that the woman going on road is the mother of Rahul.

If Reeta is the wife of Amit's brother, then what is the relation of Amit with Reeta?

(a)Amit is the son of Reeta

(b) Amit is the brother in law of Reeta

(c) Amit is the brother of Reeta

(d) Amit is the husband of Reeta

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (b) is correct because husband's brother is the brother in law. Here, Amit is the brother of Reeta's husband and therefore, Amit will definitely be the brother in law of Reeta.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (b).

Pointing to a boy in a photograph Rashmi says that the boy in the photograph is the son of her father. How is Rashmi related to that boy?

(a)Mother                       (b) Aunt

(c) Sister                                    (d) Niece

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (c) is correct because father's son is always brother. Therefore, Rashmi is the sister of the boy in photograph.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (c).

Blood Relation Based on Family Tree

In such problems more than one information is given. Hence, a family tree is required. Let us see the format of information given below.

Information format

Q is the brother of C and C is the sister of Q, R and D are brother and sister. R is the son of A while A and C are wife and husband.

For such type of information a family tree is made in which some symbols are used as below.

(i)    is used for husband and wife

(ii)  is used for brother and sister

(iii) is used for parents (father and mother). Parents are put on the top while children are put at the bottom

(iv)  $'-'$or minus sign is used for female

(v)  '+' or plus sign is used for male

Now adopting and using the above given symbols we can make a family tree, Let us see the family tree for information given under information format.

Family tree:

As per the given information Q is the brother of C and C is the sister of Q. Hence, relation between C and Q has been presented as $\left( {{C}^{-}}\_\_{{Q}^{+}} \right)$ where '-/ sign above C makes it clear that C is a female and '+' sign above 'Q' makes it clear that Q is a male. Similarly, for R and D the presentation $\left( {{R}^{+}}\_\_{{D}^{-}} \right)$ has been made. Further, according to the given information, A and C are having a husband and wife relationship and hence, this has been presented as$\left( {{A}^{+}}\Leftrightarrow {{C}^{-}} \right)$. As it is already given that C is the sister of Q while A and C are wife and husband. Therefore, it is clear that A is a male member of the family. This is the reason A has '+' as its gender sign. Lastly, the vertical line gives father and son relationship and has been presented as

.

Now, from this family tree it becomes clear that C is the mother of R and D and as Q is the brother of C then Q will definitely be the maternal uncle of R and D. Hence, we can say that Q is the maternal uncle of D.

Example 1

If A is the brother of B, C is the mother of B and D is the brother of C then, D is the maternal uncle of A and B.

Explanation: In such problems a family tree is required.

Let us see the tree below:

It is clear from the picture that D is the maternal uncle of A and B.

Example 2

The number of males in the following tree is 4.

Explanation: As we know that in a family tree V sign is given for male persons. Therefore, it is clear from the picture that L, M, B and N are males because they are having '+' sign. Therefore/ there are four males in the family tree. Similarly/ number of female persons can also be obtained. In this case, there are two females C and D.

L is the son of M while M is the father of N. P is the daughter of L and T is the wife of M. How is T related to P?

(a)Grandmother (paternal)

(b) Grandmother (maternal)

(c) Mother

(d) Aunt

(e) None of these

Option (a)is correct.

Let us see:

Clearly, T is the paternal grandmother of P.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).

Who is the son in law in the given family tree?

(a)N                              (b) E

(c) P                                          (d) B

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (a) is correct because from the given family tree, it is clear that daughter of D and P is E who is married to N. Therefore, clearly, N is the son in law of D and P.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).

How many females are married in the given family tree?

(a) 2                                          (b) 4

(c) 1                                          (d) 0

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (a) is correct because it is clear from the picture that the two females Q and M are married.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a),

Pinky said, "Rinky is the daughter of my brother's wife", How is Rinky related to Pinky?

(a)Sister                         (b) Daughter

(c) Mother                      (d) Niece

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (d) is correct because 'daughter of my brother's wife' does mean daughter of brother, and daughter of brother is niece.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

In a five member family M and N are brother and sister; M is the wife of T and D is the father of T. T has a son L. How is L related to D?

(a)Grandson                   (b) Son

(c) Brother                     (d) Husband

(e) None of these

Option (a) is correct.

Let us see:

Clearly, L is the grandson of D.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).

How is L related to X?

(a)Grandson                   (b) Granddaughter

(c) Son                         (d) Grandson or granddaughter

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (d) is correct because it is clear from the picture that L is the child of Y and P. Therefore, L must be the grandchild of X. But here/ the gender of L is not given and therefore, it cannot be definitely said that L is a male or a female.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

Pointing a man in a photograph Rani said, "He is the brother of my father's brother".

How is the man in the photograph related to Rani?

(a)Son                          (b) Uncle

(c) Brother                                 (d) Father

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (b) is correct because the sentence 'brother of my (Rani's) father's brother' does mean Rani's uncle.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (b).
