OBJECTIVES

 

·      Students will learn how to arrange a single series of alphabets.

·      They will learn to decode the logic involved in the alphabetical sequence.

 

 

 

INTRODUCTION

 

Alphabet test is a group of English letters. It is a test to solve the problems based on letters of English alphabet.

Some basic facts related to Alphabet Test are given below:

 

 

I. The Alphabet Series:

 

The English Alphabet contains 26 letters as shown below:

      

 

II. Letters positions in forward alphabetical order:

   

 

 

III. Letters positions in backward or reverse alphabetical order:

IV. A, E, I, 0, U are vowels and remaining letters are consonants of English alphabet respectively:

V. A-M (1-13) letters are the first half of English alphabet.

 

VI. N-Z (14-26) letters are the second half of English alphabet.

 

 

 

Types of Questions

 

 

 

Type 1: Alphabetical Order of Words

 

Arranging words in alphabetical order implies 'to arrange them in the order as they appear in a dictionary'. First consider the first letter of each word. Arrange the words in the order in which these letters appear in the English alphabet.

 

         Examples

 

                1.         Arrange the following words as per order in the dictionary.

A. Nose     

B. Mouth    

C. Eyes      

D. Hair

(a) D, C, A, B    (b) C, D, B, A   

(c) A, B, D, C    (d) D, C, B, A

Ans.     (b)

Explanation: The given words begin with letters N, M, E, H respectively. Their order in English alphabet is E, H, M, N. Thus, the correct alphabetical order of these words is as follows:

\[Eyes\to Hair\to Mouth\to Nose\,i.e.\,C,D,B,A\]So, option (b) is correct.

 

 

2.         Arrange the following words as given in dictionary.

1. Across   2. Admit    3. Advise   4. Alone

(a) 1, 2, 3, 4                  (b) 1, 2, 4, 3      

(c) 1, 3, 2, 4                   (d) 4, 3, 2, 1

Ans.     (a)

Explanation: Here, first letter of all words is A'. For the second letter, two of the words have 'd'. We now move on to the third letter in each of these two words and then arranging the words accordingly, we get

\[Across\to Admit\to Advise\to Alone.\]

So, 1, 2, 3, 4 is the correct order of the words.

Hence, option (a) is correct.

Note: In some cases, two or more words begin with the same letter. Such words should be arranged in the order of second or third letters in the alphabet.

 

 

3.         Which of the following words will come fourth in the English dictionary?

(a) False                        (b) Follow       

(c) Faithfully                   (d) Fool

Ans.     (d)

Explanation: The given words can be arranged in the alphabetical order as:

Now, Clearly, Tool9 comes fourth. So, the correct   

 

 

Type 2: Letter-Gap Problems

 

In letter-gap problems, one has to find out as many letters in the same sequence between them in the given word as in the English alphabet.

 

                4.         How many letters are there in the word 'MOUTH' which have as many letters between them in the word as in the English alphabet?

(a) One                          (b) Two        

(c) Three                        (d) None

         Ans.     (a)

Explanation: According to the question:

       

So, such number of letters is TU.

Hence, option (a) is correct answer.

 

 

 

Type 3: Rule Detection

 

            rule detection, four options are given as the group of letters and out of these ur groups of letters, students are asked to choose the correct alternative which follows a certain rule in a particular manner.

Type 4: Alphabetical Quibble

 

 

This type of questions, generally a letter-series is given of English alphabets from m A to Z or a randomised sequence of letters. The students are required to d out how many times a letter satisfying the certain condition.

Type 5: Word Formation By Unscrambling Letters

 

In this type of questions, a set of English letters is given in a jumbled order.

The student is required to arrange these letters to form a meaningful word.

Type 6: Word Formation Using Letters of a Given Word

 

In this type of questions, students have to form words using letters of a given word.

 

8.         In the following question, choose one word which can be formed from the letters of the given word.

(a) REAL                       (b) CARE     

(c) RANGE                     (d) FARE

Ans.     (c)

Explanation: Only 'RANGE' can be formed from the given word 'ARRANGE'.

(a) REAL cannot be formed as there is no 'L' in the given word.

(b) CARE cannot be formed as there is no 'C' in the given word.

(d) FARE cannot be formed as there is no 'F' in the given word.

So, option (c) is correct.
