You can send sound or audio input to the computer through a special input device called microphone. A microphone converts the sound received into the computer's format, which is called digitized sound or digital audio. A microphone can work only if your computer has a special hardware known as sound card. Sound is more often used in multimedia where there is recorded narration, music or sound effects. A microphone is a hardware peripheral that is a popular solution for computer gaming.   In 1876, Emile Berliner invented the first microphone used as a telephone voice transmitter. Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, tape recorders, karaoke systems, hearing aids, motion picture production, live and recorded audio engineering, megaphones, in radio and television broadcasting and in computers for recording voice and speech recognition.
