While we condemn the crime we are sympathetic to the criminal. Is this the reason why the prison staff develops a soft corner for those in custody?

    Answer:

The reason why the prison staff develops a soft corner _for those in custody is that constant interaction brings people closer. There is increased understanding between them. They may not be in a position to justify the action but can explain it. With the passage of time they can empathize with the criminal. They begin to associate with their needs and desires. Human bonding develops. Moreover, as humans we tend to pity people who are suffering. Just as we identify with the characters, in a book or a film, we can identify with their pain and suffering. The prison staff pities them and perhaps are subconsciously grateful that they are not in the same position. They .thus, try to bail out the person from his grief by the little compassion they can, within legal boundaries. In this story, it is said that buried somewhere in Jackson, the senior police officer, beneath all the bluster, was a tiny core of compassion and Evans knew it. It was this feeling that Evans manipulated when he said he wanted to wear his hat as it was his lucky charm. Also, despite the fact that Jackson and Evans had become sworn enemies, Evans thought fondly of him once he was out of prison. He felt that old Jackson wasn't such a bad fellow.
