The Governor directed the police to head for New/bury. He was very easy to fool. It was only when he rang the Radcliffe that the truth hit him. He did track down Evans at the Golden Lion. Evans was aghast to see the Governor. The clue was in the correction slip and in the instruction for filling up the sheets and Evans admitted how he had plotted it all. Yet, when the prison officer hand cuffed the recaptured Evans, the Governor put him in the van and easily let him escape. He, too, overlooked it when Evans agreed that he wouldn't be with them next September. He knew that Evans had a friend to masquerade as a teacher and then as the examiner, yet, once again, he trusted him blindly. He could have verified the credentials of the police officer or accompanied him himself.
