What are the hydrolysis products of (i) sucrose and (ii) lactose? (i) Sucrose is a disaccharide of glucose and fructose and lactose is adisaccharide of glucose and galactose. (ii) Disaccharides on hydrolysis give monosaccharides.

    Answer:

    (i) Sucrose is dextrorotatory but after hydrolysis producesdextrorotatory glucose and laevorotatory fructose. Since, the laevorotation of fructose   (-92.4°) is more thandextroratation of glucose (+52.5°), the mixture is laevorotatory andit is known as invert sugar. (ii) Lactose on hydrolysis produces -galactoste and-glucose.
