What is glycogen? How is it different form starch?

    Answer:

Glycogen is a polysaccharide (carbohydrate) which is storedin animal body. It is present in liver, muscles and brain. When the bodyneeds glucose, enzymes break down the glycogen into glucose. Starch is a polysaccharide which is stored in plants. It consists of twocomponents amylose and amylopectin. Amylose is water soluble andmakes 15-20% of starch. Amylopectin is insoluble in water and makes80-85% of starch. Glycogen mainly resembles amylopectin in structure. Both glycogenand amylopectin are branched polymers of glucose but glycogen ismore highly branched than amylopectin. Glycogen chain consists of10-14 glucose units whereas amylopectin chains consist of20-25 glucose units.
