\[{{\text{C}}_{\text{4}}}\]pathway is advantageous over \[{{\text{C}}_{3}}\]pathway in plants as it

    A)  occurs in relatively low \[\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\]concentration

    B)  uses more amount of water

    C)  occurs in relatively low \[{{\text{O}}_{2}}\] concentration

    D)  is less efficient in energy utilisation

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

A plant with the \[{{\text{C}}_{4}}\] pathway has a tremendous advantage over a plant with a \[{{\text{C}}_{3}}\] pathway. When the weather is hot, acid, dry, the leaves close their stomata to eliminate water less. In a \[{{\text{C}}_{3}}\] plant this closure   results   in  low  carbon  dioxide concentrations and ultimately both loss of RuBP and inhibition of the Calvin-Benson cycle by photorespiration. There are no such disadvantages in a \[{{\text{C}}_{4}}\] plant during hot, dry weather. Even with its stomata are closed, carbon dioxide is fixed because of the efficiency of REP carboxylase in trapping and concentrating carbon dioxide. Consequently, the Calvin-Benson cycle continues to produce glucose and there is no loss of chemical energy through photorespiration.
