  • question_answer
\[\text{Fe(OH}{{\text{)}}_{\text{3}}}\]can be separated from \[\text{Al(OH}{{\text{)}}_{3}}\]by the addition of

    A)  NaCI solution

    B)  dil. HCl solution

    C)  NaOH solution

    D)  \[\text{N}{{\text{H}}_{\text{4}}}\text{Cl}\]and \[\text{N}{{\text{H}}_{\text{4}}}\text{OH}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

\[\text{F}{{\text{e}}^{\text{3+}}}\] and \[\text{A}{{\text{l}}^{3+}}\] both belongs to group \[\text{II}{{\text{I}}^{\text{rd}}}\] of inorganic analysis and both are precipitated as their hydroxides on adding group reagent, ie, \[\text{N}{{\text{H}}_{\text{4}}}\text{OH}\] in presence of \[\text{N}{{\text{H}}_{\text{4}}}\text{Cl}\text{.}\] \[F{{e}^{3+}}+3O{{H}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}Fe{{(OH)}_{3}}\] \[A{{l}^{3+}}3O{{H}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}Al{{(OH)}_{3}}\] but only ppt of \[\text{Al(OH}{{\text{)}}_{\text{3}}}\] is soluble in NaOH solution. Hence, \[\text{Fe(OH}{{\text{)}}_{3}}\] and \[\text{Al(OH}{{\text{)}}_{\text{3}}}\] are separated by using NaOH solution.
