In the cyanide extraction process of silver from argentite ore, the oxidising and reducing agents used are

    A) \[{{O}_{2}}\] and CO respectively

    B) \[{{O}_{2}}\] and Zn dust respectively

    C) \[HN{{O}_{3}}\]and Zn dust respectively

    D) \[HN{{O}_{3}}\] and CO respectively

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Silver ore is oxidised by using oxygen from air \[4Ag+8NaCN+2{{H}_{2}}O+{{O}_{2}}(air)\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}\] \[4Na[Ag{{(CN)}_{2}}]+4NaOH\] In this. Ag(0) is oxidised to Ag (+ 1). Silver is precipitated from the solution by addition of zinc powder. \[2Na[Ag{{(CN)}_{2}}]+Zn\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}N{{a}_{2}}[Zn{{(CN)}_{4}}]+2Ag\downarrow \]Silver gets reduced from Ag (+1) to Ag (0).
