Iron changes its crystal structure from body centred to cubic close packed structure when heated to 91\[916{{\,}^{o}}C\]. Calculate the ratio of the density of the bcc crystal to that of ccp crystal, assuming that the metallic radius of the atom does not change

    A)  0.639

    B)  0.743

    C)  0.896

    D)  0.919

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

In bcc, space occupied =68% of the total ir volume available. In ccp, space occupied == 74% of the total  volume available. It means for the same volume, masses of bcc .and ccp are in the ratio of 68:74. As the volume is same, ratio of density is same. \[\frac{d(bcc)}{d(ccp)}=\frac{68}{74}=0.919\]
