Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion There is no current in the metals in the absence of electric field. Reason Motion of free electrons are randomly.

    A)  If the Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

    B)  If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

    C)  If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

    D)  If both Assertion and Reason are false.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

It is clear that electrons move in all directions haphazardly in metals. When an electric field is applied, each free elects acquire a drift velocity. There is a net flow of charge, which constitute current. In the absence of electric field this is impossible and hence, there is no current.
