Direction for: In each of the following questions a statement of Assertion is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as

Assertion \[\text{CHC}{{\text{l}}_{\text{3}}}\] is stored in closed dark coloured bottles completely filled so that air  is kept out. Reason \[{{\text{1}}^{\text{o}}}\] amines on reaction with ethanolic KOH and \[\text{CHC}{{\text{l}}_{3}}\]give carbylamine.

    A) If both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.

    B) If both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

    C) If Assertion is true but Reason is false.

    D) If both Assertion and Reason are false.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

\[\text{CHC}{{\text{l}}_{3}}\]is stored in dark colored bottles and properly stopped to keep out air because in presence of air or light, it slowly oxidized to poisonous gas phosgene (carbonyl chloride). \[CHC{{l}_{3}}+\frac{1}{2}{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow[light]{Air\,or}\underset{(phosgene)}{\mathop{COC{{l}_{2}}}}\,+HCl\] \[RN{{H}_{2}}+alc.KOH+CHC{{l}_{3}}\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{\text{carbylamine}}{\mathop{RNC}}\,\] Hence, both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.
