Most of the plant products used for drugs are

    A) alkaloids

    B) fibres

    C) resin

    D)        oil

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The products of medicinal plants contain many alkaloids. These alkaloids are used for the synthesis of drugs. The medicinal value of drugs is due to the presence of certain substances such as alkaloids glycosides, resin, volatile oil gums, etc. The alkaloids are most active among these. Chemically, vegetable fibres are mainly composed of cellulose, a macromolecule built up of repeated glucose units that constitute the structural framework of cell wall. Essential oils are a class of vegetable oils which are usually chemically a complex mixture of organic substances. Resins seem to be oxidative products of essential oils, occuring as secretions in special ducts often mixed with other substances such as latex, essential oils or gums.
