Downs syndrome is caused by non disjunction of

    A) autosome

    B) sex chromosome

    C)                        Y-chromosome

    D) None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Downs syndrome is usually associated with a trisomic condition for one of the human autosome (chromosome-21). Non-disjunction of chromosome pair 21 during spermatogenesis can produce the child with Downs syndrome. Thus, the gamete has 24 chromosomes instead of 23 and offspring has 47 chromosomes. The chromosomes which singly or in pair determine the sex of the individual in dioecious or unisexual organism are called sex-chromosomes, allosomes or idiochromosomes. Y-chromosome is a male-determining chromosome in human. It contains some genes on non-homologous part called holandric gene.
