A salt on treatment with dil. \[\text{HCl}\] gives a pungent smelling gas and a yellow precipitate. The salt gives green flame test and a yellow precipitate with potassium chromate the salt is

    A) \[NiS{{O}_{4}}\text{ }\]

    B)        \[Ba{{S}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\]

    C)        \[Pb{{S}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}\]

    D)        \[CuS{{O}_{4}}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Since, the salt on treatment with dil. \[\text{HCl}\] gives a pungent smelling gas \[(S{{O}_{2}})\] and a yellow ppt., it must contain \[{{\text{S}}_{\text{2}}}\text{O}_{3}^{2-}\] (thiosulphate ion) and further since it gives green flame test, it must contain \[\text{B}{{\text{a}}^{\text{2+}}}\]ion. Therefore, salt is \[\text{Ba}{{\text{S}}_{\text{2}}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\text{.}\]
