  • question_answer
A galvanometer of resistance 100\[\Omega \] gives full scale deflection for 20 mV. Find the resistance to be attached, so that it gives full scale deflection of 5 V:

    A) \[24.9\times {{10}^{3}}\Omega inseries\]

    B) \[24.9\times {{10}^{3}}\Omega \,\,in\,\,parallel\]

    C) \[49.3\times {{10}^{3}}\Omega \,\,in\,\,series\]

    D) \[49.3\times {{10}^{3}}\Omega \,\,in\,\,parallel\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Initially at full scale deflection, the maximum current passing through the galvanometer resistance is \[I\] \[I=\frac{20\,mV}{100\Omega }=0.2\,mA\] Next for full scale deflection of 5V \[(R+100)I=5V\] Or \[R+100=\frac{5V}{I}=\frac{5V}{0.2\,mA}=25\times {{10}^{3}}\Omega \] So, \[R=25,000-100=24.9\times {{10}^{3}}\Omega \] Hence, \[R=24.9\times {{10}^{3}}\] in series
