Suppose a beam of electrons with each electron having energy \[{{E}_{0}}\] incident on a metal surface kept in an evacuated chamber. Then,

    A) electrons can be emitted with any energy with a maximum of \[{{E}_{0}}\]

    B) no electrons will be emitted as only photons can,  emit electrons

    C) electrons can be emitted but all with an energy \[{{E}_{0}}\]

    D) electrons can be emitted with any energy with a maximum of \[{{E}_{0}}-\phi ,\]where being work function

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The emitted electrons may lie near the. surface and so can have a maximum amount of energy \[\tan \phi =-2\cot \theta \] If they arc form deep inside, then energy is less than\[\theta =90+\lambda \]
