RAJASTHAN PMT Rajasthan - PMT Solved Paper-2005

  • question_answer
Taj Mahal marble is affected by:

    A)  \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    B)  \[{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[{{O}_{3}}\]

    D)         \[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

\[S{{O}_{2}}\] emitted from Mathura refinery (located about 40 kms from the Taj Mahal) as well as foundaries, power house and railway yards gets mixed with the atmospheric moisture and gets converted into sulphuric acid which settles down on the exterior of the Taj Mahal. The acid reacts with the marble \[(CaC{{O}_{3}})\] leading to corrosion and discolouration of the monument.
