In the following radioactive decay, \[_{92}{{X}^{232}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}{{\,}_{89}}{{Y}^{220}},\] how many \[\alpha \] and \[\beta \] particles are ejected from X to Y? [AIPMT 1999]

    A) \[3\,\alpha \] and \[2\,\beta \]

    B) \[5\,\alpha \] and

    C)             \[3\,\alpha \] and \[3\,\beta \]

    D) \[5\,\alpha \] and \[5\,\beta \]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

[c] By mean of emission of an \[\alpha \]-particle the atomic number is decreased by two unit while mass number is decreased by four unit, but in case of emission of one,  \[\beta \]-particle the atomic number is increased by one unit while mass number is not effected
                            \[_{92}{{X}^{232}}\underset{-3\beta }{\mathop{\xrightarrow{-3\alpha \,and}}}\,{{\,}_{89}}{{Y}^{220}}\]
                So, \[3\,\alpha \] and \[3\,\beta \] particles are ejected.
