The rate of reaction between two reactants A and B decreases by a factor of 4, if die concentration of reactant B is doubled. The order of this reaction with respect to reactant B is: [AIPMT (S) 2005]

    A) - 1

    B) - 2

    C) 1

    D) 2

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    [b] \[A+B\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}\Pr oduct\]
                \[Rate\,\propto \,\,[A]\,{{[B]}^{-2}}....(i)\]
The rate decreases by factor 4 if the concentration of reactant 'B' is doubled
                So Rate \[\propto \,\,\,[A]\,{{[2B]}^{-2}}\]
                \[\propto \,\,\,\frac{[A]\,{{[B]}^{-2}}}{4}....(ii)\]
Hence, order of reaction w.r.t. reactant B is -2.
