Science has made human life happier in many ways. It is difficult to enumerate the advantages it has conferred upon man. The last and not the least important way in which science has changed people and made them more civilized is by making them more tolerant.

A tolerant person is one who does not interfere with other people, even if he thinks they are wrong, he may try to persuade them to believe differently, but he will not try to force them. A great deal of misery of mankind in the past has sprung from people being unwilling to tolerate other people thinking differently from themselves. This intolerance has been particularly common in religious matters. People who did not share the religious views of the rulers were tortured and burnt alive. Two persons, cherishing different religions fought bloody battles. Science has enabled man to reason and control overflowing passions that arise from intolerance. In the present, the countries, firmly believing in two different political ideologies are coming together because they are becoming more and more tolerant. If science has increased the horrors of war, it it has increased the possibility of eternal peace, too, which will come from tolerance.

विज्ञान ने कई तरीकों से मानव को खुशहाल बनाया है। उसके द्वारा मानव को प्रदान किए हुए लाभों की गणना करना मुश्किल है। आखिरी किंतु कम महत्वपूर्ण नहीं - विज्ञान ने लोगों को बदला है-उसने लोगों को अधिक सभ्य और सहिष्णु बनाया है।

एक सहिष्णु व्यक्ति वह है जो दूसरे लोगों के साथ हस्तक्षेप नहीं करता, भले ही वह समझता हो कि वे लोग गलत हैं, वह उन्हें अलग तरीके से विश्वास करने के लिए प्रेरित कर सकता है, परंतु वह उन्हें बाध्य नहीं करेगा। पूर्व में मानव जाति की दुर्दशा का कारण यह रहा कि लोग अपने से भिन्न विचार रखने वाले को सहन नहीं कर सके। इस प्रकार की असहनशीलता विशेषकर धार्मिक मामलों में पायी जाती थी। जो लोग शासकों के धार्मिक दृष्टिकोण को नहीं मानते थे, उन्हें प्रताड़ित किया जाता था तथा यहाँ तक कि उन्हें जिंदा जला दिया जाता था। दो भिन्न धर्मों को मानने वाले खूनी लड़ाइयाँ लड़ते थे।

विज्ञान ने मानव को तर्कपूर्ण होकर असहनशीलता से उत्पन्न हुए भावावेशों को नियंत्रित करने में समर्थ किया है। वर्तमान में दो भिन्न राजनीतिक विचारधारा वाले देश आपस में निकट आ रहे हैं, क्योंकि वे अधिक से अधिक सहनशील हो रहे हैं। यदि विज्ञान ने युद्ध के भय को बढ़ाया है, तो उसने अनंत शांति की संभावना को भी बढ़ाया है, जो सहनशीलता से आएगी।
