People moan about poverty as a great evil, and it seems to be an accepted belief that if people had plenty of money, they would be happy and useful and get more out of life. As a rule there is more genuine satisfaction in, life and more obtained from life in humble cottages of the poor man than in the palaces of the rich. I always pity the sons and daughters of the rich man, who are attended by servants and have governesses at a later stage; at the same time, I am glade to think that they do not know what they have missed.

It is because I know how sweet, happy and pure the home of honest poverty, is how free from perplexing care and from social envies and jealousies—how loving and united the members are in the common interest of supporting the family, that I sympathise with the rich man's boy and congratulate the poor man's son. It is for these reasons that from the ranks of the poor so many strong, eminent self-reliant men have always sprung and must always spring. If you will read the list of the "Immortals who were bom not to die", you will find that most of them have been poor.

लोग गरीबी को एक बड़ी बुराई के रूप में शिकायत करते हैं तथा यह स्वीकृत विश्वास है कि यदि लोगों के पास काफी धन होगा तो वे खुश होंगे तथा उपयोगी होंगे। साथ ही वे जीवन में ज्यादा कुछ प्राप्त करेंगे। सामान्यतः गरीबी की सुविधाओं-विहीन कुटियों में धनियों के महलों की अपेक्षा ज्यादा सच्चा संतोष प्राप्त होता है तथा जीवन से ज्यादा सुकून प्राप्त होता है। मुझे धनिक लोगों के पुत्र-पुत्रियों पर दया आती है। उनकी सेवा के लिए नौकरचाकर होते हैं और आगे की व्यवस्था में उनकी देखभाल के लिए निजी शिक्षिकाएँ होती हैं। साथ ही मुझे इस बात की प्रसन्नता है कि वे यह नहीं जानते कि उन्होंने क्या खोया है।

यह इसलिए कि मैं जानता हूँ कि गरीब एवं ईमानदार लोगों के घर कितने मधुर, प्रसन्नवपवित्र होते हैं, वे पीड़ादायक चिंता, सामाजिक वैमनस्य एवं ईर्ष्या से कितने मुक्त होते हैं-इनके परिवार के सदस्य परिवार के पोषण हेतु कितने एक-दूसरे से जोड़े हुए तथा प्यार-मोहब्बत से आबद्ध होते हैं। मेरी धनिकों के पुत्रों के सहानुभूति है तथा मैं गरीबों के पुत्रों को बधाई देता हूँ। इन्हीं कारणों से गरीबों में से ही कोई शक्तिशाली एवं प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त लोग और स्वनिर्भर व्यक्ति हमेशा से उत्पन्न हुए हैं और होते रहेंगे। यदि आप ‘अमर जिनकी कभी मृत्यु नहीं होती’, की सूची पर दृष्टिपात करेंगे तो आपको पता चलेगा कि इनमें से अधिकतर लोग गरीब थे।
