  • question_answer
At same temperature which pair of the following solutions are isotonic?

    A) \[0.2\text{ }M\text{ }BaC{{l}_{2}}\]and 0.2 M urea

    B)  0.1 M urea and\[0.1\text{ }M\text{ }NaCl\]

    C)  \[0.1\text{ }M\text{ }NaCl\]and\[0.1\text{ }M\,{{K}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]

    D) \[0.1\text{ }M\text{ }Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\]and\[0.1\text{ }M\text{ }N{{a}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

                     Isotonic solutions have same osmotic pressure and same molar concentration. The solution of \[0.1\text{ }M\text{ }Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\]and \[0.1\text{ }M\text{ }N{{a}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]are isotonic. Osmotic pressure of\[0.1M\text{ }Ba(N{{O}_{3}})\] \[=3\times 0.1\text{ }RT\] \[=0.3RT\] Osmotic pressure of\[0.1\text{ }M\,N{{a}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] \[=3\times 0.1\text{ }RT\] \[=0.3RT\] Hence, these are isotonic.
