                     The coelocanth fishes arose in the Devonian period and became extinct about 50 million years ago. The last fossil coelacanth are found in the Cretaceous period. In 1939 a specimen was caught off from the east coast of Africa and named as Latimeria. It is the most ancient living vertebrate which has persisted unchanged for 100 million years. It is also called "living  fossil".
