MGIMS WARDHA MGIMS WARDHA Solved Paper-2003

  • question_answer
The following four solutions are kept in separate beakers and copper metal is put in each of them. Which solution will become blue after some time?

    A) \[AgN{{O}_{3}}\]solution

    B) \[Zn{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\]solution

    C) \[Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\]solution

    D) \[NaN{{O}_{3}}\]solution

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The element, placed above in electrochemical series, can replace the elements (placed below) from their solution. Here copper is placed only above silver (Ba, Zn and Na are placed above Cu). Hence, it can replace Ag from its salt solution. Thus, solution becomes blue due to\[C{{u}^{2+}}\]ions. \[Cu+2AgN{{O}_{3}}(aq)\to \underset{blue}{\mathop{Cu{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}(aq)}}\,+2Ag\]
