  • question_answer
As a result of radioactive decay 92U238 is changed to \[_{\text{91}}{{\text{U}}^{\text{234}}}\text{.}\] The particles emitted during decay are:

    A)  one proton and one neutron

    B)  one \[\alpha \]-particle and one \[\text{-}\]particle

    C)  two \[\text{-}\]particle and one neutron

    D)  two \[\text{-}\]particle and one proton

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

We know that when a-particle is emitted then atomic mass number is reduced by 4 unit and atomic number is reduced by 2 unit and when \[\beta \]-particle is emitted from a nucleus then mass number remain unchanged and atomic number is increased by 1 unit. Therefore, when radioactive decay of \[{}_{92}{{U}^{238}}\] is changed to \[{}_{91}{{U}^{234}},\] then it is quite clear that one \[\alpha \]-particle and one \[\beta \]-particle is emitted.
