An exothermic reaction with \[\Delta S=-ve,\,\]is:

    A)  spontaneous at all temperatures

    B)  non-spontaneous at low temperatures

    C)  non-spontaneous at high temperatures

    D)  spontaneous at high temperatures

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    An exothermic reaction with \[\Delta S=-ve,\]is spontaneous, when: \[\Delta H>T.\,\Delta S\] i.e., at low temperatures. Since from, Gibbs-Helmholtz equation. \[\Delta G=\Delta H-T.\Delta G\] \[\Delta G\] to be negative, \[\Delta H>T.\,\Delta S\] (if \[\Delta H=-\,ve,\]\[\Delta S=-\,ve\]) Hence, reaction will be non-spontaneous at high temperatures.
