    Provirus is

    A)  a free virus

    B)  primitive virus

    C)  integrated viral genome

    D)  a free DNA

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Provirus is the DNA of a virus that has integrated into the DNA of the host cell and is transmitted from one cell generation to the next in this state. The\provirus can excise from the hosts DNA and resume a productive viral cycle with the production of virus particles. In case of Lambda phage the DNA first becomes circular due to joining of its both cohesive ends and then is integrated into the circular DNA molecule of the bacterium. Such an integrated and dormant viral genome is often termed as provirus or prophage. An infectious virus particle is composed of a core of only one type of nucleic acid (DNA or RNA), which is wrapped in a protective coat of protein called capsid and known as virion. In the primitive atmosphere, some gaint nucleoproteinoid   molecules   had   certain characteristics of a free-living gene. These could be coinpared to present day viruses having nucleic acid core and protein covering These were called protoviruses or protobionts by Oparin.
