By which of the following reagents, both the aldehyde and the primary alcoholic group of glucose are oxidised?

    A)  Toilers reagent

    B) \[B{{r}_{2}}+{{H}_{2}}O\]

    C) \[HN{{O}_{3}}\]

    D)  All of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Tollens reagent and bromine water both are mild oxidising agent, thus oxidise only aldehyde group. HN03, being strong oxidizing agent, oxidises both the aldehyde as well as the primary alcoholic group and gives glucaric acid. \[\underset{glucose}{\mathop{\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  C{{H}_{2}}OH \end{smallmatrix}}{\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  CHO \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{{{(CHOH)}_{4}}}}}\,}}\,\xrightarrow[-{{H}_{2}}O]{HN{{O}_{3}}[3O]}\underset{glucaric\text{ }acid}{\mathop{\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  COOH \end{smallmatrix}}{\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  CHOH \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{{{(CHOH)}_{4}}}}}\,}}\,\]
