Acid rain is mainly caused due to increase in the levels of the gas(es)

    A)  \[S{{O}_{2}}\] only

    B)  \[C{{O}_{2}}\] only

    C)  \[S{{O}_{2}},\text{ }C{{O}_{2}}\]

    D)  \[N{{O}_{2}}\] and \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Acid rain problem can be attributed mainly to atmosphere pollutants such as oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. The oxides of sulphur are released from the smoke stacks of coal fired power plants, smelters and other industries. The oxides of nitrogen came from combustion of fuels in automobiles as well as in power plants. Once in the air, these oxides may react with moisture to form \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]and \[HN{{O}_{3}}\]as shown in reactions : \[\begin{align}   & S{{O}_{2}}(oxidised)\to SO{{3}_{3}}+{{H}_{2}}O\to {{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}} \\  & No(oxidised)\to N{{O}_{2}}+{{H}_{2}}O\to HN{{O}_{3}} \\ \end{align}\]
