The pyruvic acid formed during glycolysis is oxidized to \[C{{O}_{2}}\]and \[{{H}_{2}}O\] in a cycle called

    A)  Calvin cycle

    B)  Nitrogen cycle

    C)  Hill reaction

    D)  Krebs cycle

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Pyruvic acid enters in the matrix of mitochondria and undergoes acetylation by oxidative decarboxylation to form 2-carbon  compounds acetyl Co-A. Kreb cycle is basically a catabolic reaction as it oxidises acetyl Co-A and organic acids into \[C{{O}_{2}}\] and \[{{H}_{2}}O.\] It involves 8 steps to oxidize 2 molecules of acetyl Co-A produced in reaction completely into \[4C{{O}_{2}},\text{ }10{{H}_{2}}O,\] \[2ATP,\text{ }2FAD{{H}_{2}}\] and \[6NADH+{{H}_{+}}\]
